LEARN-A-COURSE

in 30 hours

Learn any course you want before you take it in school.

Public and Private school courses are designed to be 110 hours in length. However, each course’s time allotment is broken down into lesson content, laboratories, quizzes, tests and work periods. We have found that the entirety of a course’s content can be taught effectively in only 30 hours.

The Learn-A-Course (LAC) Summer Camp Advancement Program by York Region Tutoring gives students a strong academic foundation in any Ontario Curriculum course through focused, one-on-one instruction, before the material is ever introduced in their regular classroom.

Standard public and private school courses span 110 hours, but much of that time is spent on labs, quizzes, tests, and in-class work periods. Based on our experience, the actual course content can be taught thoroughly and effectively in as little as 30 focused hours with an expert tutor. The LAC program is built around that insight.

These courses are designed for skill mastery, not official credit. Because LAC courses do not count toward your Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), your school will not be notified that you have already covered the material. You simply arrive in class confident, capable, and significantly ahead of your peers.

Program Structure and Time Breakdown

Each LAC course is divided into 5 to 9 curriculum units, with 3 to 8 hours of instruction per unit depending on the complexity of the subject. Every unit includes a quiz and closes with a unit test. The program concludes with a comprehensive final exam designed to assess overall mastery of the material.

Component Hours
Content Instruction 30.0 hours
Quizzes, Unit Tests, and Final Exam 11.5 hours
Total Program Duration 41.5 hours

All assessments are created and reviewed by certified teachers from YRDSB and YCDSB to ensure full alignment with current Ontario Curriculum standards.

Completely 1-on-1 Summer Camp Program

Our LAC program is completely one on one by default. Your child works individually with a dedicated tutor, with no group instruction and no shared time.

Friends are welcome to enroll together and request to be paired, but individual sessions remain the standard. The result is instruction that is fully adapted to your child’s pace, strengths, and gaps.

Flexible Summer Scheduling

Because every LAC course is fully 1-on-1, scheduling is completely flexible around your summer. Weddings, vacations, summer school, family trips, whatever your calendar looks like, we work around it. The standard course runs across 15 sessions of 2 hours each, and you choose the 15 days that work best for you. A custom timetable is put together based on your selected course and your availability.

Whether your goal is to preview next semester’s material, fill in gaps from the previous year, or simply get ahead, we will build a schedule that fits your summer.

IB and AP Students

Many students in International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) programs also enroll in the LAC Summer Camp to strengthen their understanding and stay ahead in these academically demanding tracks. Because of the depth and complexity involved across both MYP and IB Diploma Programme levels, full curriculum coverage may require more than the standard 30 hours of instruction.

Our tutors are experienced with IB and AP content and can adapt the pace and focus to match your specific course and goals. We build customized learning plans for these students individually. If you are pursuing an IB or AP program, contact us directly so we can build a schedule and lesson plan that fits your curriculum, timeline, and learning objectives.

Top 3 Reasons Parents & Students Opt for LAC

1.
Master the Material

Stepping into a challenging subject can be daunting, especially if it is a prerequisite for future academic goals. Our summer camp program gives students a vital head start by introducing core concepts early. By gaining prior understanding of the material, students will:

  • Boost Academic Confidence: Eliminate the anxiety of facing unfamiliar topics.

  • Build Cognitive Familiarity: Pre-learning builds strong mental frameworks, making complex content much easier to absorb when taught in school.

  • Improve Grades: Early exposure allows for deeper comprehension, leading to higher performance on assignments and exams.
2.
Ease the Transition into the Next Grade

The first few weeks of a new semester carry more weight than most parents realize. Early unit tests and assignments happen before students have fully adjusted to the workload, and a weak start creates a GPA deficit that takes the rest of the term to recover. Previewing the entire curriculum ensures students have already worked through every unit before September, so those crucial early assessments reflect genuine preparation rather than adjustment. Instead of spending the first month catching up, students spend it pulling ahead.

The Learn-A-Course program is strategically designed to mirror the exact structure of a typical high school course, blending interactive learning with realistic assessments. By keeping students mentally engaged and academically active during breaks, we minimize learning loss and ensure a seamless, stress-free transition into the new school year.

3.
Competitive Advantage

The Learn-A-Course program gives students a clear academic edge without raising any flags on their university application. Because the program does not grant Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) credit, universities will not recognize it as a previously completed or repeated course. Students gain all the benefits of having fully mastered the curriculum, stronger grades, deeper understanding, and greater confidence, with zero impact on their transcript or their competitive standing in university admissions.

Whether your child is working to close a gap or pushing toward the top of the class, the LAC program can help
"My oldest son did the LAC program the summer before Grade 11 and again before Grade 12. I cannot overstate how much it changed his approach to school. He stopped dreading new material and started walking into class already knowing it. He is now in Waterloo Engineering, which is exactly where we hoped he would end up."
