Grade 8 Science tutoring at YRT involves lessons in the 5 key Sciences, with a narrowed focus on Anatomical & Cellular Structures/Functions, Atomic Theory, Dynamics, and Earth & Space Sciences. These 4 topics are at the centre of every student’s studies in high school Science. We give students a strong foundation for these 4 core topics early on to smoothen the transition from Grade 8 to Grades 9 & 10 Science (cc: SNC1D, SNC2D respectively).

We reinforce essential Math skills that enable students to thrive in Grade 9 Mathematics (cc:MPM1D) and beyond. There is a great deal of overlap between concepts taught in both Grade 8 and Grade 9 Mathematics. Where possible, our tutors strive to teach grade 9 Math concepts to our grade 8 students, thereby smoothing the transition to Grade 9 while still reinforcing foundational Grade 8 concepts.

Upon commencing Grade 9 Science, students delve into the details and intricacies presented in each of the 4 Physical Sciences.
What is an ion? What is an ionic bond? What is an ionic compound? What is ionization? What is a polyatomic ion? Although there are similarities between these terms, it is their major conceptual differences that are often tested. Yet, students tend to interchange these terms. Why?

Mathematics is a sequential subject, and so the math learned today is the foundation of all future mathematical learning. Such foundations must be strong so that students can confidently approach topics that involves greater complexities and abstractions (i.e Grade 10 Factoring, Radicals, Quadratics, Trigonometry).

Each unit in Grade 10 Science brings unique challenges. In Chemistry, students use their learning of atoms, compounds and the periodic table to identify and name complex ionic & covalent compounds containing polyatomic ions, transitions metals and peroxides. Students are also expected to distinguish between various types of acids, including Binary and Oxyacids.

In Grade 9, students were introduced to the notion of Linear Relations and Equations. In Grade 10, students are expected to translate the concepts behind Linear Relations to a Geometric context. Slopes, y-intercepts, creating and rearranging linear equations must be applied to triangles, parallelograms and finding shortest distances in real life scenarios.

York Region Tutoring enrols more students in Grade 11 Math tutoring than in any other subject. In this course, students investigate properties of discrete and continuous functions, including rational, quadratic, trigonometric and exponential functions. Further, students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in determining and analyzing inverse functions as well as equivalent algebraic expressions.

In Grade 11 Physics, students explore topics in kinematics, with an emphasis on linear motion; different kinds of forces; energy transformations; the properties of mechanical waves and sound; and electricity & magnetism. Student needs in this course are wide and varied, with recurring patterns of difficulty in Dynamics, Energy Transformations and Electricity & Magnetism.

To the surprise of many parents (and students new to the course), Grade 11 Chemistry involves a substantial amount of mathematical processes. Students must have an intuitive understanding of unit rates, ratios & proportions if they are to approach topics in 11 Chemistry with greater ease.

Common difficulties in Grade 11 Biology stem from differentiating between the various types of fatty acid triglycerides, carbohydrates and amino acids as well as their respective ester, glycosidic, and peptide bonds that can be broken and re-formed to create complex chemical structures.

In this course, students further explore the laws of dynamics and energy transformations, and investigate electrical, gravitational, and magnetic fields; electromagnetic radiation; and the interface between energy and matter.
York Region Tutoring urges all students to complete the past tests that we compiled specifically from YRDSB/YCDSB School Teachers. Tests in the Grade 12 maths and sciences tend to follow a very strict layout, and so completing them will give students the opportunity to assess their strengths and weaknesses as well as where to focus studying.
