What is HOSA?
HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) is an international student organization dedicated to promoting career opportunities in the healthcare industry and enhancing the quality of healthcare through leadership development, professional training, and networking opportunities. HOSA is widely recognized for preparing students for future careers in healthcare by providing educational conferences, competitions, and leadership training.
In Ontario, HOSA operates as HOSA Canada, offering high school and post-secondary students a platform to explore medical and healthcare-related fields. HOSA Canada follows the same mission as its international counterpart, focusing on equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in healthcare professions.
The mission of HOSA Canada is to enable secondary and postsecondary students to become leaders in the healthcare industry.
History of HOSA
HOSA is the leading health science student organization in North America. Originally founded in 1976 as Health Occupations Students of America, it now supports over 250,000 active members annually and has a network of more than 2.5 million alumni. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, HOSA is one of the largest providers of Career and Technical Education.
HOSA Canada, established in 2014, is the largest chartered association outside the U.S. Since its inaugural Spring Leadership Conference (SLC) in 2015, HOSA Canada has hosted the country’s largest health science student competition, with over 6,000 students participating in SLC 2019.
HOSA Secondary School Club
HOSA is typically organized as a club within high schools. Many schools have HOSA chapters run by student leaders and guided by a teacher advisor. These clubs allow students to participate in training sessions, competitions, and healthcare-related activities.
If a school doesn’t have a HOSA club, students can start one by reaching out to HOSA Canada for guidance on registration and organizing a chapter. Some students also join independently if their school doesn’t offer a club.
